The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will make history. These are some of the first smartphones in the world with so much storage: up to 1TB. Think that’s a lot? It depends on what it’s for. The iPhone 13 Pro lets you take photos in Apple ProRaw format and videos in Apple ProRes. Such files hold a lot of information and weigh a lot.

Are the cameras in the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max different?

If you’re looking for a smartphone with a good camera, there’s no need to choose between the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Both models have the same sensor, lenses, stabilisation system and feature set. So you’ll be guided by whether the iPhone 13 Pro (6.1″) or iPhone 13 Pro Max (6.7″) is more comfortable in your hand.

Why is everyone discussing ProRes?

The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are the only smartphones from Apple that can record video in ProRes. It’s a popular format in professional video recording that keeps footage in excellent quality with maximum retention of detail and dynamic range. This footage is ideal for later editing with cinematic quality.

Since the data in ProRes is only lightly compressed, it requires virtually no decompression resources on the device. This speeds up the post-processing process and makes it smoother. This is especially true when working with multiple streams at once.

You can edit videos shot in the ProRes format using the Photos app or iMovie for iPhone. You can also use video editors for iPad, iPhone and Mac that support this format.

Why is Apple’s ProRes format so voracious?

The purpose of ProRes is to preserve every frame of the video in the quality the camera captures. It doesn’t save any space at all. And the more color and detail information the file contains, the heavier it is.

The size of a ProRes video can exceed the size of HEVC files by a factor of several dozen. For example, at 1080p resolution and 60 fps, a minute of 10-bit ProRes video requires 3.1 GB. 8-bit takes up 2.7GB. And that’s just one minute! That’s why free space can run out faster than you’d expect.

How much storage should I choose for my iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max?

If you’re a videographer, blogger or simply shoot photos and videos every day, go for the 512GB or 1TB models. They let you process and edit your footage right on your phone. And no need to worry about where to move it all as your phone’s memory is rapidly running out. The 1TB version is also designed for those who shoot a lot of ProRes video in maximum quality.

Please note: you won’t be able to shoot 4K video in ProRes mode on the base iPhone 13 Pro with the 128GB storage. You simply won’t have enough space, which is why Apple has limited the capabilities of these smartphones in advance. The 128GB versions can record 1080p videos at 30fps.

So the starter model for the best quality shooting (4K and 30fps) is the 256GB iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max. That’s not a lot and not even average – it’s just the bare minimum. And besides heavy videos, you’ll probably need space for system files, photos, games, work presentations and other everyday content.

So it turns out that the 512GB model is the “golden mean” for those who shoot video at a professional or at least amateur level. And for those who can afford the maximum, there’s the 1TB version.
