Intel-based Macs, which were produced until 2020, use the traditional x86 architecture. You can install Windows on a MacBook for free using the built-in Boot Camp utility. In this case, Windows uses all of the laptop’s hardware resources, but you cannot run macOS at the same time. You can choose which operating system starts by default. To switch to another OS, restart the device and hold down the Option key.
Macs with Apple Silicon chips (M1 and newer) use the Arm architecture, and Boot Camp is no longer available on these models. A full installation of Windows is not possible, but you can run a second operating system in a separate window within macOS using a virtual machine or emulator. However, model incompatibility or outdated drivers can sometimes affect performance and stability.

There are three proven ways to install Windows on a Mac. The best option primarily depends on the processor.
Boot Camp Utility (for Intel-Based Macs)
Boot Camp is Apple’s official tool that has been used for years. When you turn on the device, you can choose which operating system to start. For some older Intel-based Macs, a bootable USB flash drive may be required during installation.
Before you begin, we recommend creating a backup with Time Machine, checking your Mac model for compatibility, and freeing up storage space (at least 64 GB, preferably 128 GB or more). The process is straightforward:
- Download the official ISO image (installation file) from the Microsoft website.
- Open Finder, go to “Applications” → “Utilities,” and launch Boot Camp Assistant.
- Select the downloaded ISO image and specify how much disk space you want to allocate to the new operating system.
- Click “Install” — Boot Camp Assistant will download the required drivers, partition the drive, and restart the computer.
- Set up Windows by following the step-by-step instructions on the screen.
After installation, Windows may need to be activated using a digital license or product key. You choose which operating system to use when starting the device. To switch systems, restart the Mac, press and hold the Option key, and select the required startup disk in the boot manager.
Boot Camp itself is a convenient solution. However, keep in mind that the assistant uses Windows 10, and official support for this version ended in autumn 2025. The system will continue to work, but without the Extended Security Updates program, it no longer receives standard security updates from Microsoft.
Parallels Desktop Virtual Machine (for Macs with Apple Silicon)
The Parallels Desktop virtual machine is one of the fastest and most convenient options for devices powered by Apple Silicon chips. To use this method, you need to purchase an annual subscription or a lifetime license from the developer.
In this case, Windows opens in a separate window and does not interfere with macOS. You do not need to restart the device, and applications from both operating systems can run at the same time. You can easily drag files between windows and use a shared clipboard, while the laptop remains responsive.
Alternative Options
If you use Windows only occasionally, paying for a subscription may be expensive. In that case, you can consider free solutions. VMware Fusion is suitable for personal use and works reliably, although its level of integration may be lower than that of Parallels Desktop.
The UTM emulator is designed to run different operating systems. It works well for basic tasks, but other alternatives are usually chosen for fast-paced games.
CrossOver runs individual applications through a Wine-based compatibility layer. This is convenient when you only need to use a specific type of software. However, the tool itself is paid.
Real-World Tests: How Well Does Windows Run on M-Series Chips?
There is no need to worry about a virtual machine slowing down — synthetic benchmarks and real-world tests from 2026 confirm strong performance. Windows 11 on Arm is more than capable of handling everyday use and most office tasks.
