Apple has introduced the long-awaited update to its professional desktop lineup: Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. Mac Studio with M5 Max The M5 Max version features an 18-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU. Each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator, helping speed up AI workloads. The GPU is nearly twice as fast as the previous generation. The chip also includes a 16-core Neural Engine. Four unified memory configurations are available: 36GB, 48GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Memory bandwidth reaches up to 614 GB/s. Storage options include 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 8TB SSD storage.

- AI image generation: up to 7.4x faster than M1 Max and up to 3.5x faster than M4 Max.
- Video editing in DaVinci Resolve: up to 5.3x faster when working with video, visual effects, and the Magic Mask tool compared with M1 Max.
- Scientific and research computing: DNA sequencing data processing in Oxford Nanopore MinKNOW is up to 3.5x faster than M1 Max and almost twice as fast as M4 Max.
Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is the most powerful model in the lineup. This chip is built for extreme workloads, with up to 36 CPU cores and up to 80 GPU cores. For the first time, the Ultra chip includes Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. AI performance is powered by a 32-core Neural Engine. According to Apple, overall graphics performance is up to 40% faster than the previous generation powered by M3 Ultra.
M5 Ultra is available with 96GB, 256GB, or 512GB of unified memory, while memory bandwidth reaches an impressive 1.2 TB/s. For projects, media libraries, and professional assets, you can choose between 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, or 16TB SSD storage.

- 3D rendering and visualization: up to 4.7x faster scene rendering in Maxon Redshift than M1 Ultra and up to 1.7x faster than M3 Ultra.
Mac Studio 2026 Overview
The two new models look almost identical. Both use the same compact aluminum enclosure and feature the same port layout. However, the port specifications differ, and the M5 Ultra version is approximately 900 grams heavier.
Key upgrades available on both Mac Studio models include support for Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. As with previous generations, they support hardware-accelerated ray tracing, hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW encoding and decoding, as well as support for up to eight external displays.
