On September 9, Apple introduced its long-awaited new products. The headliners of the “It’s Glowtime” presentation were the new iPhone 16, 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro, Pro Max. Here’s what’s new.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

The screen size of the “junior” version is 6.1 inches, while the “senior” version is 6.7 inches. For the first time, the base lineup includes two new buttons – the Action Button and the Camera Capture Button. The iPhone 16 has a peak screen brightness of 2000 nits, and a minimum brightness of 1 nit (in the dark).

Both models are designed with the potential of the Apple Intelligent neural network in mind.

New Design, Colors, and Two New Buttons

The first thing that stands out is the new camera module. Now, the lenses are arranged vertically instead of diagonally. The panel is covered with tempered glass, which is 50% stronger than that of the iPhone 12. There are five color options:

  • Black
  • White
  • Pink
  • Turquoise
  • Ultramarine

The Action Button is located on the side frame. With just one press, users can access various functions. By default, the button is used to switch to silent mode. However, it can be customized for other actions: instantly opening the camera, turning on the flashlight, launching Shazam, and more.

The Camera Control button for taking photos and videos is equipped with a touch-sensitive surface and will be supported by Apple Intelligence. There are four types of interactions:

  • A quick press – launches the camera
  • A short, light press – takes a photo
  • Press and hold – starts recording video
  • A tap – brings up additional tools for selection

Interestingly, the Camera Control button activates a feature that resembles the functionality of Google Lens: hold it down, point the camera, and Apple Intelligence will identify what’s in front of you. For example, it can even recognize a dog’s breed.

Performance

The power of the iPhone 16 is driven by the upgraded A18 chip, built using a 3-nanometer process with 6 graphic cores. Memory bandwidth is 17% higher than the previous generation, and machine learning operates twice as fast.

Gamers will surely appreciate the redesigned cooling system, which is now 30% more efficient.

By the way, the A18 chip provides more than enough power for new AAA games. For an even more immersive experience, you can connect a game controller.

Camera

The vertical arrangement of the cameras in the iPhone 16 is intentional: it allows for spatial video recording for Apple Vision Pro. The main Fusion camera now features a 48 MP sensor. For comparison, the iPhone 14 had four times lower resolution. With this sensor, you can crop down to 12 MP while maintaining the same aperture level. The 12 MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus captures impressive macro shots.

Apple has increased the battery capacity in the iPhone 16. Combined with the energy-efficient A18 processor, the smartphone will now last longer without needing to recharge.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

The 2024 flagships are a collection of cutting-edge innovations. Let’s start with the basics. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in at 6.9 inches, which is 0.2 inches larger compared to their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro (6.1 inches) and iPhone 15 Pro Max (6.7 inches). Both displays support a 120Hz refresh rate.

Apple has called these new models “the most autonomous iPhones in history.

Titanium Body and Four Colors

The Pro versions are made with grade 5 titanium and feature very slim bezels. There are four color options:

  • Black Titanium
  • White Titanium
  • Natural Titanium
  • Gold Titanium (also known as Desert Titanium)

Performance

Both devices are equipped with the A18 Pro chip, built using a 3-nanometer process.

  • The CPU, with 6 high-performance cores (even faster than the M1), is 17% more powerful than the A17 Pro.
  • The 6-core GPU is up to 20% faster than in last year’s iPhone 15 Pro.
  • The 16-core neural engine delivers exceptional performance for Apple Intelligence features.

What does this mean in practice? The flagship handles even the most demanding tasks with ease. Compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro processes video up to twice as fast.

Professional Cameras

Many consider the iPhone to be one of the best smartphones for mobile photography, and these new models reaffirm that reputation.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature the same camera setups:

  • 48 MP Fusion main camera
  • 48 MP ultra-wide camera
  • 12 MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, implemented with a tetraprism lens, similar to the iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro now supports 4K slow-motion video recording at 120 FPS.

The iPhone 16 Pro supports ProRes, Log, and Dolby Vision. Just think: a smartphone can now replace a professional camera! In the Photos app, you can adjust the frame rate during the editing process.

There are also new filters and presets available, so you won’t need third-party apps anymore.

The flagships also feature a new touch control button for the camera – Camera Control. Positioned below the lock button, it allows you to manage the shutter, zoom, and other settings through touch interactions.

The audio recording capabilities are noteworthy. The Pro versions are equipped with four studio-quality microphones and support spatial audio recording. They feature Audio Mix and can focus on sound in three modes: reducing background noise, highlighting voice, and separating it from music directly on the smartphone. Additionally, you can adjust the audio after recording to give it a more cinematic quality. This means your TikTok videos will reach a whole new level!
