On average, the battery in an iPhone, iPad, or Mac is designed for several years of active use. After that, its capacity starts to degrade, and the device begins to discharge more quickly. This is a natural process and cannot be completely stopped. However, improper usage can accelerate it. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do to preserve your battery’s health for as long as possible.
The most important rule for all gadgets: avoid overheating. Consistent exposure to high temperatures causes chemical changes inside the battery, leading to faster degradation. Also, if the device gets too hot, it will start to throttle—reducing the processor’s speed to prevent damage.
How to Extend iPhone and iPad Battery Life
Let’s start with how long an iPhone battery lasts. Modern models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 retain 80% of their capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. In contrast, the iPhone 14 and earlier versions retain 80% after only 500 cycles.
One charge cycle equals a full 100% charge followed by a full discharge to 0%. Once these cycles are used up, the iPhone will start holding a charge for less time. This usually takes 2–4 years. If battery life becomes an issue, you have two options:
-
Replace the battery with a new, original one at an authorized service center;
-
Buy a new iPhone. By the time the battery reaches the end of its cycle life (around three years), you’ll probably be ready for an upgrade anyway.
The iPad battery also lasts several years and retains up to 80% of its capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. You can leave both iPhone and iPad plugged in overnight without harming the battery. Once the charge hits 100%, power is cut off, and charging resumes only if the level drops below 95%.
Tips to Extend iPhone and iPad Battery Life:
-
Regularly update to the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS to get system bug fixes and performance optimizations that reduce battery load.
-
Don’t charge your devices under a pillow, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight.
-
Avoid playing high-performance games while charging, as this generates heat.
-
Don’t charge the device in environments above 35°C (95°F).
-
Try to keep the charge level between 20% and 80%. Daily charging to 100% is not necessary and can shorten battery lifespan.
-
Avoid letting your device completely drain to 0%.
-
Enable automatic brightness adjustment to conserve energy better than manual settings.
-
Use Low Power Mode.
-
Enable features that adapt charging to your routine to reduce battery wear. On iPhone, these are called “Charging Limit” and “Optimized Battery Charging”. On iPad, enable “Charging Limit – 80%”.
Important: On iPhone 15 and 16, you can view the number of charge cycles used. The same applies to iPad Pro (M4), iPad Air (M2 and M3), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see this info.
How to Keep Your MacBook Battery in Great Shape
Apple laptops are among the most power-efficient on the market. But to maintain that advantage, some additional care is required—such as cleaning the internals and replacing thermal paste. If not done, dust buildup through the vents can reduce heat dissipation and cause overheating. This not only wears out the battery faster but can also damage internal components.
Thermal paste helps transfer heat from the processor chip to the heat sink efficiently. Over time, it dries out and becomes less effective, leading to overheating and loud fan noise.
To extend your MacBook’s battery life:
-
Get your cooling system checked and thermal paste replaced every two years. You can do this at an iSpace service center.
-
Avoid using your Mac on soft surfaces like beds or blankets, especially when running demanding software. Soft materials trap heat and block airflow.
-
Don’t place your Mac on a heater or in direct sunlight while charging, as this increases heat.
-
Keep your battery level between 20% and 80% to use the battery wisely and extend its lifespan. Apple states that MacBooks made after 2009 are designed for 1,000 charge cycles.
-
Enable Optimized Battery Charging in macOS. It learns your charging habits and adapts—for example, maintaining 80% while plugged in and reaching 100% just before you usually unplug it.
-
Close unused apps—background processes can drain the battery faster.
Now you know how long iPhone and iPad batteries last and how to maintain your MacBook’s battery. Apple devices are highly durable—if used properly, you can enjoy them for many years without needing a battery replacement. If you have any questions, contact the Apple service center in Armenia—iSpace. They not only sell devices but also repair them in line with Apple’s standards.
