On October 15, Apple unveiled the M5 chip, a breakthrough in the development of its proprietary processors. It significantly increased performance and made artificial intelligence tasks even faster. The new M5 became the basis for the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro—here’s what makes them so impressive.
M5 Chip: What’s the Deal
The new chip isn’t just an update, it’s a big step-up. It’s built using 3-nanometer process technology and optimized for energy efficiency. The AI performance of the M5 is 3.5 times higher than that of the M4. The processor features a new generation of GPU with a neural accelerator in each core, a more powerful CPU, an accelerated neural engine, and increased memory data transfer speeds.
Component | Characteristic | Why it’s important |
CPU | 10 cores (6 efficiency cores and up to 4 performance cores) | Multithreaded performance up to 20% higher than in M4 |
GPU | 10 cores, each with a neural accelerator | The 3rd generation ray tracing; graphics performance up to 30% higher than in M4; up to 45% graphics boost in applications using ray tracing (compared to M4) |
Neural Engine | 16 cores. Complements neural accelerators in processors. | Significant acceleration of LLMs and AI-related functions |
Memory | The bandwidth – 153 GB/s (almost +30%) | Faster data exchange between components, smoother operation with heavy projects |
MacBook Pro M5: Same Design, But With Innovations Inside
Apple has packed all the power of the new chip into a familiar body. The MacBook Pro with the M5 chip is sure to become a favorite among video editors, IT specialists, and creators. After all, it significantly speeds up rendering, coding, working with generative models, visual effects, and 3D scenes. And at the same time, it has a long battery life.
- Fast processor — the M5 is now even more efficient and responsive. 10 cores deliver up to 20% more power (compared to the M4). This speeds up code compilation, creative applications, and multitasking in general. This MacBook Pro is ideal for analysts, designers, developers, and business professionals working with Python, Rhino, Notion, or Jira. And with high memory bandwidth (over 150 GB/s), it easily handles large AI models and complex 3D scenes right on the device.
- Improved graphics — the GPU has been significantly upgraded: the M5 delivers up to 1.6 times faster performance in professional applications and games compared to the MacBook Pro with M4. A neural accelerator in each core helps the M5 process intelligent tasks faster — such as generating and recognizing images, analyzing video and speech. Compared to the first-generation Apple Silicon (M1) chip, AI tasks are processed up to 6 times faster in the M5!
- The accelerated SSD subsystem is up to 2x faster than the M4. Importing files, RAW images, exporting large videos, and launching local LLMs takes less time.
- Storage is up to 4 TB.
- Phenomenal battery life is up to 24 hours. You can take your projects with you and work away from power outlets.
- Screen —14-inch Liquid Retina XDR. Brightness up to 1600 nits for HDR and up to 1000 nits for SDR. There is a version with a nano-texture (anti-glare).
There is also a complete work kit: 12 MP Center Stage camera, 6 speakers, a wide range of ports, and macOS Tahoe.
iPad Pro M5: Extremely Thin & Powerful
The iPad Pro remains the thinnest device in the company’s lineup at 5.1 mm. And while its thickness hasn’t changed compared to last year, its “insides” have been significantly improved. Meet the new iPad Pro M5—a tablet with the computing power of a professional laptop.
- The iPad Pro with Apple M5 chip features a fast 10-core processor (4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores). Memory bandwidth exceeds 150 GB/s — nearly 30% more than the M4. This helps users multitask, process artificial intelligence models faster, play resource-intensive games, and more.
- Next-level graphics. The iPad Pro M5 is designed for artificial intelligence. The tablet also features an improved graphics processor with a neural accelerator in each core. Any intelligent tasks — from voice recognition to creating images directly on the device using diffusion models (as in Draw Things) — are performed faster. According to Apple’s own calculations, the M5 chip performs AI tasks 3.5 times faster than the M4.
- The fast Neural Engine with 16 cores speeds up all AI tasks. It excels at Foundation Models-based applications, as well as Apple Intelligence features such as image generation in Image Playground.
Thanks to the new processor, the tablet performs 3D ray tracing rendering 1.5 times faster. By the way, the ray tracing here is 3rd generation: light, reflections, and shadows are more realistic than ever. Therefore, buying an iPad Pro M5 for gaming would be a good idea.
- The Ultra Retina XDR display is one of the most advanced in the world. It is bright, with high contrast and support for ProMotion and True Tone. Standard brightness reaches 1000 nits, with a peak of 1600 nits for HDR. For color work or bright lighting, there is an option with nano-textured glass that reduces glare without compromising image quality.
- New C1X cellular modem (as in the iPhone Air).
- The dimensions remain unchanged. As before, the top-of-the-line iPad Pro M5 is available in two sizes: 11 (5.3 mm) and 13 (5.1 mm) inches.
- Battery life: up to 10 hours of video playback over Wi-Fi.
- Wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are the latest standards.
- RAM/Storage: 12 GB/256 GB, 12 GB/512 GB, 16 GB/1 TB, 16 GB/2 TB. This is enough even for large projects in DaVinci Resolve or Unreal Engine.
- Fast charging. When using a 40-60W adapter, the iPad Pro 2025 charges to 50% in just 30 minutes (11-inch version) or 35 minutes (13-inch).
- Accessories: Support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) styluses, Magic Keyboard, and Smart Folio magnetic cover.
- Cameras: 12 MP main and front cameras.
- New iPadOS operating system.
