Over the past six months, iPhone users have been actively discussing when iOS 26 will be released — many even downloaded the beta version to check out the functionality sooner. Apple has finally announced a release date of September 15. The update has been available for smartphones for just over a week and has once again become one of the most talked-about topics on social media. So, let’s take a closer look at iOS 26: what’s new and how can you use it?

Glass Interface

First and foremost, the iOS 26 update was eagerly awaited because of its sensational “glass” design — Liquid Glass. The effect of superimposed glass is created in real time using the principles of light refraction and reflection from interface elements.

There have also been quite a few changes to the locked screen:

  • wallpapers with a spatial scene effect;
  • a clock that adapts to the screensaver and notifications;
  • animated covers for music tracks.

All icons and interfaces of built-in applications have been given the same “glass” effect. They can be customized with preset shades or made transparent. Many third-party programs are also gradually switching to a similar design.

Camera and Photos

The camera interface has been simplified visually. Now, when you take photos in 16:9 aspect ratio, you see the entire image rather than an additional interface. There are two modes at the bottom: video and photo. To switch to portrait mode or cinema mode, swipe your finger to the side.

You can now play videos or take photos using your headphones (available on AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 and newer versions). To do this, simply swipe the stem of the accessory.

In the Photos app itself, collections and libraries have been separated—they are now in different tabs, making it easier to search for photos. By the way, you can manage albums: collapse them, swap them around, and choose their design.

Parental Control

Child safety has been improved. Now, children can send a request to their parents’ smartphones when they need to contact an unknown number. Parents can also permit third-party apps to receive data about their child’s approximate age. This will help in selecting relevant content. Previously, this feature was limited for security reasons.

In FaceTime calls and messages, the system recognizes and blocks nudity. There is also a new option to easily convert a regular account to a child account without losing security options.

Artificial Intelligence

Built-in Apple Intelligence has more options and is integrated into new processes. However, it is not available in all countries. Useful features:

  • Visual Intelligence — quick search by image from the screen, adding events to the calendar.
  • Live Translation — automatic translation in messages and during calls (via AirPods).
  • Image Playground and Genmoji — generating emojis and images based on descriptions.

In Quick Commands, artificial intelligence helps summarize large texts and generate images.

Safe Communication

The system now filters calls and messages from unknown numbers. Before your phone rings, you will receive a short notification about a new contact. Messages from unknown senders are placed in a separate folder, and you decide how to deal with them.

Chats in iOS 26 can be personalized: add a unique background that is visible to all participants. You can use standard images or your own photos. It is now possible to create polls in groups and participant activity indicators.

Other Features

In fact, there are many reasons why you should update to iOS 26 already. Here are some more interesting options:

  • Preferred Routes in Maps — for tracking regular routes;
  • AutoMix — for mixing several tracks, like DJs do;
  • Lyrics Translation — for automatic song translation;
  • Tapback — for simplified responses to messages while driving;
  • Viewer — for quickly scanning, viewing, and editing PDF files.

The system can analyze your behavior and adjust the energy-saving mode. For example, if you usually come home at 6 p.m. and your phone understands that the battery will definitely run out before then, it will adapt all options and help extend the battery life. This feature is available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later models.

iOS 26: Which iPhones Can Download the Update?

The release date of iOS 26 was a hot topic, but no less interesting was which iPhones would receive iOS 26. After all, Apple periodically discontinues support for older generations whose hardware may no longer be able to handle new features. The latest version of the operating system is available for all models starting with the iPhone 11. Apple’s reference guide specifies which features are available for which smartphones.

The release date for all subsequent minor updates to iOS 26 will be announced separately. Don’t ignore them — they usually improve energy efficiency and the performance of the entire system.

Sum Up

All the new features of iOS 26 are designed to make your user experience more enjoyable — from glass accents to message filtering. By the way, Apple has set a new direction in digital design with its new interface.
